Oak for Sustainability

Oak for Building

Timber is one of the most sustainable building materials available to man. Not only that but it is one of the most beautiful.

The character of an Oak building comes from exposing the frame, both internally and externally. The structure of the frame and the beauty of the Oak make a stunning combination.

Exposing the Oak frame - showing it off - is possible because Oak has a closed cellular structure and a tight grain which comes from years of slow and steady growth. Using traditional methods of joints and pegs means that as Oak dries, the stronger it gets and the stronger the joints get. Its strength also means that it is naturally resistant to insect and fungal attack - and the elements.

Oak for Sustainability

During growth, trees absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide remains within the timber until it is either burned or returns to the natural cycle. This makes wood one of the few materials which actively reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere - a natural contribution to our environment that we cannot ignore.

And, if taken care of, Oak buildings last many hundreds of years, compared to the 30+ years of growth required - this makes Oak invaluable, durable and extremely sustainable.

At Hopewood Oak we are passionate about timber framing and we are serious about minimising our impact on the environment. All the products that we use in our business are sourced within a 50 mile radius whenever possible. Local sourcing means that we cut down on transportation and time and above all, we support local businesses.
